With so many bars and taverns to choose from, it is hard to choose just one
for 2009, but the winner of this award can be a favorite watering hole from
your neighborhood, a hip new hot spot or the corner tavern that has your
favorite bartender.

The bar was warm and inviting. It had lots of glass, a fireplace, sofas, stereo music and hanging plants, all novelties for that time. In a matter of months, Fager’s Island went from a strictly bar atmosphere to selling the first of Fager’s still-famous overstuffed sandwiches.  Again, a first in the seaside resort. Thoughts of the townhouse project were quickly disappearing as the success of the “Island” grew.

John Fager decided to experiment with a few menu items using fresh quality products.  Within a matter of months of opening, Fager’s Island was filling up, hiring more wait staff and proving the naysayers wrong. Opening in the summer of ’75 with just the bar, John added sandwiches, then entrees, then a fine dining room, enlarged the kitchen – all within the first year. He continued his dream with outdoor dining by adding multiple decks with a décor that would become part of the charm and élan of Fager’s Island. Monday night Deck Parties have become legend for locals and vacationers alike return year after year. The restaurant has developed a fine reputation for consistency, outstanding service and exceptional cuisine. With all this success, John was looking for a new challenge and eventually decided on the next step.

While traveling, John had discovered a number of small boutique hotels in resort areas that he found to be most inviting. He felt that Ocean City should have an upscale hotel for guests that provided a different kind of getaway for people who appreciate quality surroundings, a refined type of guest service, and with the restaurant connection, he was confident he could provide the culinary equivalent.
