Nicholas B. Mangione, born February 17, 1925, has been a lifelong resident of
Baltimore, Maryland. Raised by Italian immigrant parents, Nick was indoctrinated with a love of family and a desire to succeed
in his parents’ newly
adopted country.
With the untimely death of his father, Nick took on the obligation as the oldest son, at the age of 11, to work various
jobs such as: selling newspapers after school, magazines door to door in the
evening and shopping bags on Saturdays at Belair Market to help his mother support the family. The family was closely bonded in their struggle to support themselves and remain independent. He attended St. James Business School, where he studied
bookkeeping. To serve his country, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the 2nd World War and served three years active duty on the Destroyer U.S.S. Caperton.
In 1950, he not only started his own
business, he also married Mary Cuba, making that year the origin of a business he still operates and a marriage contract he still honors. The following 50 years were filled with the growth of their family, ten children in all, and the gradual development
of the Mangione Family Enterprises.
On November 2, 2008, Nicholas B.
Mangione passed away and is survived
by his wife, Mary Cuba as well as their children, in-laws and grandchildren.
As an entrepreneur, Nicholas Mangione was a man with big dreams and he also saw to it that those dreams were realized. The Mangione name has been synonymous
with Baltimore and Howard County here in Maryland. Nick may have been most notable for building a premier golf resort and hotel from 1,000 acres of former horse pastures on the western edge of Ellicott City at Turf Valley. Today, Turf Valley
is a multi-faceted retreat with two
championship golf courses, pools,
tennis courts, a European Spa and more than 40,000 square feet of versatile
function space.
But to those who knew him, there was much more to Nicholas Mangione and his business enterprises. Regardless of his financial and professional successes, Nicholas Mangione was a family man. His wife of 58 years, Mary and their ten children were all intimately involved in managing his company and its many projects. In additional to Turf Valley, the Mangione Family Enterprises includes a chain of seven Lorien nursing homes, two Hilton hotels in Baltimore County, an
excavating company, radio stations and other impressive local holdings.
