Culinary Arts is nothing new to Chef Bette Mullins: she’s been in the business since she can remember. Her passion for food took her to the Culinary Institute of America, where she graduated in 1979. After working for The French Bread Factory Bette searched for a job that allowed her to share her passion with young minds. She began teaching high school students in 1983 at Eastern Technical High School in Baltimore County. While at Eastern, Bette and her students assisted Dara Bonjun test recipes for a cookbook to support the National Kidney Foundation. She encouraged a group of her students to compete in the first MPSI management competition. Her team placed first and went on to represent Maryland at the National ProStart Invitational in Charlotte, NC.
After 24 years of teaching at Eastern Technical High School, Bette transferred to the Carver Center for Arts and Technology. Bette rejuvenated the ProStart Program at Carver and has taken two culinary and two management teams to MPSI. The management team at Carver Center has won first place at MPSI for two years and the culinary team has placed second for two years. The management team will once again represent Maryland at the National ProStart Invitational in San Diego, California in April.
