With so many bars and taverns to choose from, it is hard to choose just one
for 2009, but the winner of this award can be a favorite watering hole from
your neighborhood, a hip new hot spot or the corner tavern that has your
favorite bartender.

According to folklore, The Red Star gained its name and reputation from sailors visiting Fells Point. They docked, lonely and water-logged, hoping to find some of the comforts of home. The sailors knew Fells Point was a good place to find a warm meal and a cold ale, along with more "intimate" necessities. The blue laws of the time prohibited the customary red lights in the district... so resourceful women painted nautical red stars on the sidewalks leading the sailors their doors. To the lonely men's delight, The Red Star was born.

While we don't serve all of the "dishes" they did back then, The Red Star continues a proud tradition of great food, refreshing drinks, and good fun. As for the comforts of home, well that's up to you...

Since opening in 2004 The Red Star has provided a warm, inviting atmosphere for its patrons, created largely by the careful attention to detail that went into its design. Unlike many of its competitors that are located in old buildings, The Red Star was built new using all reclaimed wood and brick, and in so doing, has captured the spirit of an old industrial building while providing the modern conveniences and efficiencies of a newly constructed space.

Unlike many other restaurant/bars, The Red Star provides a place where people feel comfortable both eating and drinking. The warm atmosphere combined with gourmet twists on comfort food and moderate pricing, makes The Red Star an appealing option for the casual diner and Baltimore foodie alike.
