These nominees are pastry chefs who prepare desserts and pastries and demonstrate a high standard of excellence and culinary artistry. Theses nominees serve as inspirations to other food professionals. They must have
been a pastry chef for five years with a minimum of two years in Maryland by January 1, 2009.

Cheryl Schneider’s story as a pastry chef started with a Christmas present. In December 200, after years of practicing law, Cheryl received a gift certificate to a local culinary school as a Christmas present. Cheryl recalls thinking “Gee, this might be fun.” As an attorney Schneider never got to anything fun like cooking. After placing the gift in a drawer and forgetting about it Cheryl happened across the close to expiring certificate in December of 2001. Before she knew it Schneider was enrolled in the next 20-week class in pastry arts: and the rest as they say is history.

In 2003 Schneider found herself in culinary school as a full time pastry arts student, “firmly on the road to recovery from law.” By that time Cheryl had already fallen in love with chocolate and was making truffles for friends and family. It was to no one’s surprise when Schneider opened a chocolate shop in 2005 – Penny Chocolates (named for her “wonderful little long-haired Dachshund”).
