Restaurant Association of Maryland Names President - Paul Hartgen, President of the Nevada Restaurant Association, to Assume Post

(Columbia, MD) The Board of Directors of the Restaurant Association of Maryland (RAM) today announced the selection of Paul P. Hartgen of Las Vegas, Nevada, as its President and Chief Executive Officer. “After conducting a thorough national search for our next leader, we are pleased to have found Paul Hartgen whom we are convinced is most capable of leading the organization at this key stage,” said Lynn Martins, Chairman of the Board of Directors and owner of Seibels Restaurant of Burtonsville, Maryland. “His hands-on, managerial experience will make all the difference as we continue efforts in making RAM the most effective and influential hospitality organization in Maryland and the region.”

On January 21st, 2008, the Taste of Maryland Legislative Reception upheld its reputation as the most celebrated legislative reception of the season dazzling the palates of lawmakers, the press and the who’s who of the restaurant and tourism industry. The evening, held at the Loews Annapolis Hotel, was organized by the Restaurant Association of Maryland (RAM) in coordination with the Maryland Association of Destination Marketing Organizations (MADMO), the Maryland Tourism Council (MTC) and the Maryland Hotel and Lodging Association (MHLA).

Restaurant Association of Maryland Names Interim President: Director of Maryland Hospitality Education Foundation Selected

(Columbia, MD) On Friday, November 16th, the Restaurant Association of Maryland named Marshall Weston Jr. interim President by action of the executive committee of the Association’s Board of Directors. Weston has been the Executive Vice President of the Maryland Hospitality Education Foundation (MHEF), a nonprofit organization that works with the Restaurant Association of Maryland, since 2002. Leading the MHEF staff, he has been instrumental in carrying out the MHEF mission of training the hospitality industry in food safety, responsible alcohol service, and management skills. As current Executive Vice President of the Maryland Hospitality and Education Foundation, Weston has worked closely with the staff of the Restaurant Association of Maryland.

Money Doesn't Grow on Trees

Maryland’s most impressive rising culinary students from 15 high schools around the state will compete for $590,500 in college and continuing education scholarships and state-wide bragging rights for the year. Participating teams are all a part of the ProStart School-to-Career program used by over 50 schools in the state. MHEF in partnership with the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation (NRAEF) established the program to enable students who are looking to enter the hospitality job market directly or making plans for college.

Wine “Doggy Bag” Bill Becomes Law on Saturday

Columbia, MD – Maryland restaurant diners who order a bottle of wine with their meal, but do not finish the whole bottle, may now take the bottle home with them. Under a new Maryland law that takes effect on July 1, 2006, restaurants may allow customers to take home unfinished bottles of wine, provided that the restaurant re-corks or re-caps the unfinished bottle.

What Happens After Thanksgiving?

It may have crossed your mind this past weekend- What happens to all the under privileged after Thanksgiving? For a few hours, many volunteers spend their Thanksgiving day providing food and company to Baltimore’s homeless residents, but are we just feeding them for a day and not teaching and helping them to become more self sufficient?
With a new opportunity to train those less fortunate than us, the Maryland Hospitality Education Foundation (MHEF) has begun training homeless residents of Baltimore city with ServSafe training through a partnership with the Franciscan Center.(Click the link above to read full story)
Maryland Hospitality Greats Honored At Awards Gala

The Hospitality Industry Awards Gala is an annual event that recognizes outstanding hospitality industry leaders and establishments in Maryland. Maryland Lawmakers Reject Statewide Smoking Ban for Restaurants and Bars
(March 2005)
In an evenly-split vote, Maryland lawmakers have killed a statewide smoking ban initiative for the third consecutive year. Members of the Senate Finance Committee rejected the measure on March 4, 2005 by a 5 to 5 vote, effectively killing the bill for the year. Legislation must win more "yea" than "nay" votes in order to pass.

Little Italy Restaurants Work Together To Aid Tsunami Relief Efforts

Members of the Little Italy Restaurant Association (L.I.R.A.) have banded together to create an event to raise money for Tsunami relief efforts. Dine Out For Disaster Relief will be held on Wednesday, January 12, 2005. Participating LIRA restaurants will donate a minimum of 10% of every meal sold to the American Red Cross International Response Fund.

Student Chefs Cater Mayoral Inauguration Reception

Culinary students from Western School of Technology in Baltimore County catered a post Inaugural Ceremony reception for Baltimore Mayor, Martin O'Malley. The reception was held on December 7, 2004 at the War Memorial in Downtown Baltimore. The high school students served punch and cookies and were joined by Alaina McCullough, Director of Workforce Development for the Maryland Hospitality Education Foundation (MHEF).
