Judy Irwin (Golden Corral), Domenic Mallardi (Charles Herbert Flowers H.S.), Lance Trenary (Golden Corral) The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) presented their 2018 Educator of Excellence Awards (EEA) for outstanding achievement to thirty-seven educators from across the country. Domenic Mallardi, a ProStart teacher at Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Prince George’s County and a 2018 EEA recipient, was also one of two teachers chosen to receive the prestigious James H. Maynard Excellence in Education Award presented by the National Restaurants Association Education Foundation and Golden Corral. This great national honor highlights the amazing work happening in Chef Mallardi’s ProStart classroom and in ProStart classrooms across Maryland. In 2018 Mallardi also led his students to place first in the Maryland ProStart Student Invitational Culinary Competition and go on to represent the State of Maryland in the National ProStart Invitational. Domenic Mallardi is an incredibly passionate teacher. His students are eager and driven to excellence, constantly working to improve their weekly projects. Chef Mallardi created Master Chefs Catering Service, a student-run catering operation. Students oversee everything from recipe development to daily operations. They have catered luncheons for the National Institute of Health and the State of Maryland Legislative Assembly. Creating these opportunities builds student confidence, ignites their passion for foodservice, and prepares them for a career in foodservice. Ensuring students are set up for success is foremost in his mind. His students adore him because he inspires them, encourages them, respects them, challenges them, and pushes them to be more than they thought they could be. He shows them they can be successful and for many of them it is the most powerful gift anyone has ever given them. ProStart teachers like Chef Mallardi are always looking for industry professionals to be guest speakers in their classrooms, host field trips to their restaurant or business, and mentor students.
