Diversity in the Restaurant Industry
- The restaurant industry is home to a diverse workforce. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2015 American Community Survey, 47 percent of restaurant employees are minorities.
- In the overall U.S. labor force, 36 percent of employees are minorities. 12 percent are Black or African-American.
- Four in 10 restaurant managers and supervisors are minorities; nearly 6 in 10 chefs are minorities.
- Between 2007 and 2012 (most recent data available), minority-owned restaurant businesses also rose sharply. The number of Black- or African-American-owned restaurants jumped 49 percent, above their corresponding growth rates in the overall economy.
